My Personal Reply to @HeyJennyLee on Twitter

🗣

This is my personal reply to @HeyJennyLee on Twitter based on ❼ reasons she presented for choosing Apple Notes over Notion as a writer.

To be clear, I actually appreciate her perspectives on this topic so this is a very positive discussion we are having here. So please, no negative mindsets are needed in reply to this topic, just an open discussion based on how we use applications to produce our life's work 😉.

My Reply to @HeyJennyLee

❶ I do agree that @NotionHQ can be slow at times but in my perspective there are always trade offs when it comes to software. When an app uses "simplicity" as a feature, then inevitably it will have "speed" as an asset. To me, Notions capabilities far outweigh any instances of "slowness" that may come up from time to time... this again is a trade-off that I'm willing to accept. To accept the simplicity of an app means there are limitations to what it can inevitably do for you later on down the road as a persons work takes on more complexity. Apple Notes would never be able to replace Notion, for me, due to the complexity that my work requires. But writing is one aspect of my work that—to me—Notion excels at. I even host my blog page within Notion.

❷ @NotionHQ does have a quick capture system. One of the many ways to quick capture notes into notion is by changing the "Add to" location of your notes. If you set up a simple page or database location to quick capture notes, this will do the job of becoming your "quick capture system in Notion". Notion is an application that becomes what a person makes it... If "simplicity" is what's wanted then it can be created within Notion.

❸ I do agree that @NotionHQ can create a better feature set around attachments, such as PDF's but again this is a trade-off for the numerous other functions that integrate into Notion... such as being able to embed widgets, maps, tweets, mind maps, and web pages into a block. To highlight one feature that Notion may be relatively weak in doesn't fully capture the variety of capabilities that Notion fulfills for a variety of workflows.

❹ Again, I can appreciate your perspective on keyboard shortcuts for your specific use case. To me this isn't a negative because I have learned to work with Notions block structure instead of working against it. In Notion paragraphs aren't just words they are types that can be changed to a page, a toggle, synced block, callout, or become something else. My mindset towards writing in Notion isn't based just around the words themselves but what they can become based on the block structure in Notion. To me this isn't a weakness if a person learns to work with this functionality instead of seeing it as a negative.

❺ This to me is your strongest point. But there are different types of Notion "experts" for different types of workflows. Some people see the design capabilities that Notion offers as the #1 reason they choose to use it but this isn't the rule. There are many "experts" such as myself that teaches function over form when using Notion. Form is important for the type of work that people do in Notion so that they enjoy the workspace they are working in but this shouldn't take precedence over the functionality of their workspace.

❻ Notion doesn't support Apple Pencil true and this is something they should explore as a feature but Notion isn't just build for Apple Users (although I'm one myself). I don't personally see this the same way you do but my workflow is different. A second brain doesn't "have to" support pen input to work but if this is your personal workflow, then of course I can appreciate why this would be a deal breaker for you.

❼ I of course disagree here... If you're focusing on speed then using different apps to accomplish everything that Notion can do is going to cut down on a persons speed because their work is going to be disjointed and spread out. This also leads to problems when you work with a team. Of course a specific tool may be able to do something quicker and better than Notion, in one or two use cases, but that isn't the point. Would you go to a foot doctor as your general practitioner? Notion serves a variety of purposes but specialized apps will always excel in their specific speciality. This isn't an apple to apples comparison. (no pun intended 😆)

Conclusions

I can definitely appreciate your perspectives on this topic for your specific use case and workflow but to me and how I work nothing comes close to Notion in enabling me to create a workspace and workflow that fits me and what I do on a daily basis. Can it improve in areas... yes... but that can be said for any application or software. But the strengths of Notion, to me, far far outweigh any weaknesses.
