Notion—What Problem Are You Solving?

Let me ask you a question, that you may or may not have ever thought about... Why does a painter paint? The answer is... to solve a problem. Well, what problem are they solving? They are either solving a personal problem, which is the burning internal desire that they have to give expression to their creativity, or they are solving a problem for a customer that is looking for a specific type of artistic expression that can only be properly expressed on a canvas whether physical or digital. Most true artists have to express themselves creatively. With both of these scenarios, they are solving a specific problem.
Notion is like that blank canvas that can be used to express something... the question is...
What Problem Are You Solving With Notion?
Many people use Notion to create elaborate dashboards for every possible scenario in their life... Others use Notion because they need a central place to plan projects... some use Notion as their hub to save books or movies that they wish to watch in the future. The question is, what problem is being solved in these scenarios?
- Do the ones creating elaborate dashboards do this because they have a burning internal desire to express themselves creatively and plan to use these dashboards to accomplish something worthwhile, or are they doing this because they think "this is what Notion is for."
- The others that use Notion to plan projects, do they use it for this purpose because it solves a specific problem in their workflow? Or did they just download a template that they thought looked nice?
- Those that use Notion to create hubs for potential books or movies to watch, do they do this because in the future, they really want to watch these movies and read these books? Or did they see someone else use Notion in this way and they thought... "that's cool"?
The point that I'm making is, what specific problem is being solved? What's the purpose? What's the plan? The reason that I mention this is because eventually... without a problem to solve... what purpose will Notion serve for you long-term? What type of long-term structure are you going to create in Notion that will help you solve problems, years down the road?
Notion right now, is a shiny new object that a lot of people are flocking to because of its ability to create just about anything. It is a tool that allows us to build something that most applications don't allow us to do. But let me ask you this... how many applications have you used in the past that you still use to this day? What long-term problem did those applications solve for you? What does that tell you?
Notion is a tool... with any tool, it's the user that determines how well the tool is going to be utilized. Using a hammer to try and drill a whole, will only work for so long because a hammer doesn't solve that problem long-term. It may be the nicest and shiniest hammer on the market but unless it solves a long-term problem that you have... it's going to find itself somewhere in a drawer or your garage.
My point is, what problem does Notion solve for YOU?
- Write it down.
- Plan it out.
- Plot your course.
Be intentional because having a blank canvas to create only becomes useful when the artist has a problem to solve. So let me ask you... What Problem Are You Solving With Notion?
